A short while ago the only news about the upcoming D&D releases were the mysterious code names Wizards of the Coast seem to use for anything they have in the pipeline. Marathon, Broadway and Catacomb. Fast forward a few months and we know that one of those at least, Marathon, was the code name for the upcoming DM and Player’s resource; Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes.
So like the prior resources of Xanathar’s Guide to Everything and Volo’s Guide to Monsters this book will also be named after another character from the D&D multiverse and in this case – probably the most famous and definitely one of the oldest. Mordenkainen is a wizard from the realms of Greyhawk not just a creation of Gary Gygax but Gygax’s actual player character from 1973 who was so influential he became baked into the lore of the world. Though most noted for his role as a Dungeon Master it was due to brief stints as a player in his friend’s Rob Kuntz’ games that Mordenkainen came to be Gygax’s favourite character to play.
As a character, Gygax never disclosed any of Mordenkainen’s actual stats but his renown as one of the world’s most powerful wizard still holds prominence even in 5th edition with a handful of spells still bearing his name as well as the name of his young apprentice, Bigby. He also makes a few appearances in some of the adventure modules themselves.
So, what’s known about the actual book is still a little on the slim side but as they did with the Tomb of Annihilation module Wizards of the Coast are hosting a whole bunch of podcasts and actual play streams on Twitch and Youtube featuring content from the book. Here’s the blurb:
Discover the truth about the great conflicts of the D&D multiverse in this supplement for the world’s greatest roleplaying game.
This tome is built on the writings of the renowned wizard from the world of Greyhawk, gathered over a lifetime of research and scholarship. In his travels to other realms and other planes of existence, he has made many friends, and has risked his life an equal number of times, to amass the knowledge contained herein.
In addition to Mordenkainen’s musings on the endless wars of the multiverse, the book contains game statistics for dozens of monsters: new demons and devils, several varieties of elves and duergar, and a vast array of other creatures from throughout the planes of existence.
There’s also an interview here from Mike Mearls discussing the book.

Similarly to Volo’s Guide to Monsters the book is aimed at both players and dungeon masters alike. On the DM side of things we have new monsters with a healthy dose of them being for CR10 and higher. Lots and lots of lore detailing the relationships between the creatures of the multiverse. Ever wondered what the Drow make of other Elves? The Githyanki and Githzerai? What about the Dwarves and their dark brothers the Duergar or the Blood War between demons and devils? All stuff that helps bring worlds and characters to life and the book also contains a dose of challenges and inspiration for building adventures for higher level characters.
On the player side of things it’s reported to contain a bunch of story hooks and other tools for character building as well as new player options for races like Tieflings, Elves, Githyanki and Githzerai.
So keep an eye on the streams leading up to it because if Wizards’ do what they did last time the information is about to arrive in the truck load. Meanwhile, here’s a gallery of artwork from the book as well as a few sneaky looks at some of the content.
